What Automatic Negative Thoughts Actually Are

ANTs are rapid, unbidden appraisals that sit between an event and your emotional response to it. They come from Beck’s cognitive model, which underpins CBT — and the reason they matter is that they feel like perception rather than interpretation.

By the time you feel bad, the sentence that did it has usually already gone. That’s the whole difficulty, and it’s why this comes before challenging or reframing anything: you can’t weigh the evidence for a thought you never caught, and you can’t replace one you can’t quote.

Why catching them is a trainable skill

Most people go from noticing nothing to reliably catching two or three a day within about a fortnight. The bigger prize arrives at the end of that fortnight, when the log shows the same two or three patterns producing nearly all of it — a far more manageable problem than it feels like from the inside.

The Ten ANT Patterns, and the Tell for Each

Naming a pattern puts a small gap between you and the thought, and that gap is where everything else becomes possible. The PDF pairs each with the specific words that give it away.

  • All-or-nothing — the words always, never, completely, ruined
  • Catastrophizing — a chain of consequences, each less likely than the last
  • Overgeneralizing — one event described as a permanent trait
  • Mind reading — a confident claim about a head you can’t see into
  • Fortune telling — a prediction stated as a fact
  • Emotional reasoning — a feeling used as evidence
  • Should statements — a rule with no author and no deadline
  • Labeling — a noun where a verb belongs

Most real thoughts fit two or three at once, and that’s fine. The label is doing its job the moment it creates distance — precision adds nothing.

How to Catch a Thought You Never Heard

You will almost never catch the thought directly. You catch the feeling and reverse-engineer what preceded it.

Track the mood drop, not the thought

Notice a moment when your mood fell — any drop counts, including small ones — then rewind two seconds. Write what went through your mind as a sentence, in the words you actually used. “I felt bad about work” is useless. “I’m going to get found out” is workable.

Find your body tell

For a lot of people the body registers an automatic thought before conscious awareness does — a tightening jaw, a dropping stomach, heat in the face. Learning your own tell shortens the delay between the thought landing and you catching it, sometimes to nearly nothing. It’s the single fastest improvement available here.

Map the trigger

ANTs aren’t evenly distributed. They cluster around particular situations, times of day and states — and the cluster is often more informative than any individual thought, because it points at something you can actually change. Sunday evenings, email, and the twenty minutes after any meeting account for a surprising share of most people’s.

The Seven-Day ANT Log

One caught thought tells you about one afternoon. Seven of them tell you about your life.

One row a day — one thought, not all of them. Log the thought, the pattern, the trigger and how strongly you believed it. Two minutes; if you’re spending longer you’ve started analyzing, which is a different exercise.

Then count

At the end of the week, read down the pattern column and count. Whatever appears most is your pattern, and people are routinely surprised — the one you’d have guessed is often not the one the log shows. Take your top three patterns and your top two triggers, and that’s your whole toolkit.

One a day, not constant monitoring

Self-monitoring can tip into self-surveillance, where you’re scanning your own mind all day. That reliably makes people feel worse, which is why the log is capped at one entry. More is not better here.

What the Research Says About Automatic Negative Thoughts

The core idea is well established. Automatic thoughts come from Beck’s cognitive model, which underpins CBT — the most heavily evidenced psychological treatment for depression and anxiety. That catching and examining them changes how you feel is about as replicated as anything in this field.

The list of distortions is looser, and it’s worth being straight about that. The categories are a clinical teaching tool rather than a validated taxonomy — they overlap, most real thoughts fit several, and there’s no agreed master list. Don’t spend energy deciding whether something is technically overgeneralizing or labeling.

What is strongly supported is the distancing itself. Being able to see a thought as a mental event rather than a report on reality — decentering — is one of the more convincing mechanisms by which cognitive work reduces rumination and depressive relapse. Full references are in the PDF.

This embedded with my empirical experience has made it a personal and interpersonal discovery – in line with my essence and natural tendency to help those around me deal with various aspects of mental well-being.

It is this multidimensional understanding of what it means to be human that is at the heart of my work.

My work as a somatic body psychotherapist draws on the concept that life is a continuous unfolding process, from the first cell in the womb to the present moment. All aspects of our being need to be considered when navigating mental health issues.

I support each client’s unique process with openness and curiosity of all these aspects, helping transform scattered energy into a coherent source of well-being and vitality, reshaping life in ways that often exceed expectations.

Through my Neuroscience of Dance project and Dance Integrated Healing Method, I offer neurocognitive and movement-based tools for healing.

For the past six years, I’ve supported dancers and educators worldwide through sessions and workshops, focusing on injury recovery, neurological rehabilitation, memory and balance, mental health, and the therapeutic potential of dance. This integration of dance, neuroscience, and psychology began during my postgraduate research on the brain mechanisms behind dance, in collaboration with a leading researcher in the field.

My research has been published in Dance Data, Cognition, and Multimodal Communication and presented at the International Association for Dance Medicine & Science (IADMS) conference. I was honoured when this project was nominated for the IADMS Dance Educator Award (2022) and the Applied Dance Science Award (2021) from One Dance UK, which also recognised me as a Healthier Dancer Practitioner.

Personally, advocate for neurodiversity as a proud dyslexic. I love cats, cute cafes, cats, long walks, writing, cats, poetry.
