What The Science Actually Says About Its Effect On Humans

Search “Schumann resonance” and you will find two very different worlds. One is built almost entirely on wellness marketing: live spectrogram widgets, “activity index” scores, and claims that a spike in the Earth’s electromagnetic field explains your headache, your bad night’s sleep, or your mood. The other is a small but real body of peer reviewed research in geophysics, neuroscience, and space weather medicine that has quietly investigated a genuinely interesting question for over 60 years. Does the electromagnetic environment we evolved in have any measurable effect on our biology?

This guide separates those two worlds. It walks through what the Schumann resonance actually is, what legitimate science has found, what remains speculative, and what is simply unsupported, so you can engage with this topic without dismissing it outright or overselling it.

What Is the Schumann Resonance?

The Schumann resonance was predicted by physicist Winfried Otto Schumann in 1952 and confirmed experimentally a few years later. It is a set of extremely low frequency electromagnetic standing waves that exist in the cavity formed between the Earth’s surface and the lower edge of the ionosphere, a conductive layer of the atmosphere roughly 60 to 90 km up. That cavity behaves like a giant resonant chamber.

The energy source is lightning. At any given moment, roughly 50 lightning discharges are occurring somewhere on Earth, mostly concentrated in three tropical regions: the Amazon basin, Central Africa, and Southeast Asia. Each strike radiates electromagnetic energy across a huge range of frequencies, but only certain wavelengths fit neatly into the Earth ionosphere cavity and get reinforced rather than cancelled out. This produces stable resonant peaks: a fundamental mode around 7.83 Hz, and successive harmonics near 14, 20, 26, and 33 Hz.

Two things are worth being precise about, since popular writing often blurs them:

  • The frequency is structural, not a “mood” of the planet. It is set by the physical dimensions of the cavity, so it does not meaningfully drift day to day. It can shift slightly with the day and night terminator, the seasons, and solar driven changes to the ionosphere, but 7.83 Hz is a stable physical constant of the system, not a number that rises when “the planet is stressed.”
  • What actually varies is amplitude, meaning how strong the signal is, and that is driven by how much lightning activity is happening globally. This is why Schumann resonance intensity has a clear seasonal pattern, higher in the Northern Hemisphere summer when tropical thunderstorm activity peaks.

It is also worth separating the Schumann resonance from geomagnetic activity. These get conflated constantly. Geomagnetic storms are disturbances of Earth’s magnetosphere caused by solar wind and coronal mass ejections, a completely different physical phenomenon. The Schumann resonance can be indirectly affected by solar activity, because solar radiation alters the ionosphere, which is one wall of the resonant cavity, but the two are not interchangeable. Most of the health research discussed below actually studies geomagnetic activity, not the Schumann resonance directly, which matters since much of the wellness content online uses the terms as if they were synonyms.

The Genuine Scientific Hook: Frequency Overlap With the Brain

Here is what makes this topic more than pure pseudoscience. The Schumann resonance’s fundamental and harmonic frequencies, roughly 7.8, 14, 20, 26, and 33 Hz, sit almost exactly inside the frequency bands used to classify human brain activity on an EEG: theta (4 to 8 Hz), alpha (8 to 13 Hz), and beta (13 to 30 Hz). This numerical overlap was first noted by researcher König and colleagues in the 1950s and 60s, who observed that the spectral power patterns of the Earth ionosphere cavity and human brain activity shared similar magnitudes in both their electric field and magnetic field components.

That observation was picked up decades later by a research group at Laurentian University led by Michael Persinger and Kevin Saroka, who ran a series of studies directly comparing quantitative EEG recordings against real time Schumann resonance measurements. Their 2016 study in PLOS ONE and their 2015 paper in International Letters of Chemistry, Physics and Astronomy reported:

  • Brief episodes, typically around a third of a second and occurring roughly once every 30 seconds, during which the spectral power of a person’s brain activity showed measurable coherence with the Schumann resonance’s first three harmonics (roughly 7 to 8, 13 to 14, and 19 to 20 Hz).
  • These coherence events were concentrated in specific brain regions, particularly around the right parahippocampal gyrus.
  • A related 2013 study in Neuroscience Letters found that EEG coherence between the brain’s left and right temporal lobes increased during periods of elevated geomagnetic activity.

It is important to be precise about what this does and does not show. These are small studies from largely one research group, and coherence between two signals in overlapping frequency ranges is not the same as proving a causal effect. It is a correlational, exploratory finding that invites replication, not a settled mechanism. But it is also not nothing. It is a specific, measurable, published claim, which puts it in a very different category from “the Schumann resonance activates your third eye.”

Geomagnetic Activity and Cardiovascular Health

Physicist Neil Cherry published an extensive 2002 review in the journal Natural Hazards arguing that Schumann resonances offer a biophysically plausible mechanism connecting solar and geomagnetic activity to human health outcomes, proposing that because these frequencies overlap with biological rhythms, disturbances in the Earth ionosphere system could plausibly perturb physiological processes.

More recent statistical studies have looked for a direct association between geomagnetic disturbance and cardiovascular events. A 2025 study published in Communications Medicine analyzed over a thousand myocardial infarction cases in Brazil and found that, within the 31 to 60 age group, women showed a relative rate of heart attacks up to three times higher during geomagnetically disturbed days compared to quiet ones, using clustering analysis across age, sex, and geomagnetic condition. Earlier related work, including a 2010 study in Advances in Space Research, found correlations between geomagnetic activity and measurable changes in brain electrical activity.

This is a real, quantifiable finding worth taking seriously, but it comes with the standard limitations of observational epidemiology. It shows correlation, not proven causation. Reputable researchers in this space are generally careful to flag that controlled, replicated studies are still needed before this becomes an established clinical risk factor rather than an intriguing statistical association.

Sleep, Circadian Rhythms, and the “Global Sleep” Hypothesis

One of the more unusual findings from the Persinger and Saroka research program involves a proposed link between Schumann resonance variation and global sleep patterns. Their work noted that shifts in the second harmonic, around 12 to 14 Hz, of the Schumann resonance correlate with estimates of how many people are asleep globally at any given time, leading them to speculate about a possible causal relationship. This remains a preliminary and unreplicated hypothesis rather than an established finding.

Separately, there is a broader and much older body of research on humans and electromagnetic shielding. Rütger Wever’s classic 1979 work, The Circadian System of Man, involved isolating subjects from natural environmental cues for extended periods and found disruptions to circadian rhythm. That research involved isolating people from many environmental time cues at once, especially light, not the Schumann resonance in isolation, so it is often over cited as direct evidence for Schumann specific effects when it is really evidence about environmental rhythm cues more broadly.

What’s Not Supported by Evidence

To keep this guide honest, it is worth being explicit about the claims that circulate widely but do not hold up:

  • “Schumann resonance regulates blood pressure” or explains a specific daily symptom
  • Claims that “the frequency is rising” or changing dramatically
  • Direct wound healing or tissue regeneration effects in humans
  • Live “activity index” scores as personal health forecasts
  • Symptom tracking against one variable, without controlling for weather, sleep, or stress
  • Treating amplitude spikes as proof of a coming “energetic shift”

Some laboratory research has looked at how electromagnetic fields in this frequency range affect isolated cells, relevant to pulsed electromagnetic field (PEMF) therapy research, but isolated cell studies cannot be assumed to translate into whole organism effects, and controlled human clinical trials in this specific area are lacking. Many popular tracking sites present a single composite number, like “Adverse” or “Moderate,” as though it were a validated clinical risk score. These are proprietary formulas combining several inputs with no established, peer reviewed link to individual health outcomes. Treat them as a novelty overlay on genuine geophysical data, not a diagnostic tool.

Electromagnetic Hypersensitivity: A Related, Unresolved Question

Some people report symptoms, headaches, fatigue, cognitive fog, that they attribute to ambient electromagnetic fields, a phenomenon sometimes called electromagnetic hypersensitivity (EHS). This is a genuinely researched area, and it is honest to say the scientific community has not reached consensus on whether EHS constitutes a distinct, identifiable physiological condition or reflects other contributing factors. That lack of consensus does not mean people’s symptoms are not real. It means the specific causal mechanism, and specifically a link to Schumann resonance amplitude, has not been established.
